384. Honey and Clover Live Action Movie – Slice of My Life

As I barely begin this post, I’m already thinking of stopping and going back to rewatch it. Dont misunderstand, this movie was not the best movie I’ve ever seen -unfortunately- but it was still good enough. I’ve been hyping up this moment for myself ever since I heard about it so I’m pretty damn surprised at how I approached this movie with an open mind rather than in rabid fangirlboy mode. When I watched Hana Yori Dango S2 and the Prince of Tennis movie, I hyped myself up so much, anything they spewed at me, I would’ve loved even if it was total crap.

There’s just something different about Honey and Clover. Not a bad thing, but something. Either way, I still liked it and I’m probably going to actually pay to go get myself the legit version. But seeing as it’s a live action adaptation, there was destined to be some dissapointments, right? (Read More »»»)

256. Series Wrapup: Honey and Clover End Chapter – Stop. Bow. Wave.

“No. No. No” is what I said as I heard “Split” starting to play. Dont take that the wrong way, those weren’t no’s of anger, it was just the fact that the series was ending finally settling in. Really, I dont know how to approach this final post. I love this series. That’s the best I can sum it up. I love this series. My posts are nothing special as compared to the many others out there, but this is the best tribute I can give. Of course, here’s where I plug in the link to Memento. I’d also give you a Honey and *four leaf* Clover sandwich but Caliburn keeps on insisting that it’d taste nasty. The fool.

I dunno, maybe it’s the fact that my life’s falling to shambles as I type, but I just couldn’t draw myself to cry during this episode. Tears started to well up, but there were no streams down my face by episode’s end. I feel as if I’m doing an injustice to what might possibly be my favorite series ever.

There is no doubt in my mind that I will watch this series again, though, and I will cry despite already knowing what happens. I’m 100% sure. (Read More »»»)

227. Honey and Clover II Chapter 10- Everyone Needs A Secret Base

I dunno. Maybe it’s the new school year -my biggest school year- that’s making me really take every scene to heart but this episode really got to me. “Hey, Shuu-chan, what does living mean? You breathe and you eat. What are you supposed to do? I don’t know”. That pretty much sums up the situation that I’m going through at the moment. So when I saw/read it, I went “Oh! Now I remember why I’m so emotionally attatched to this series”. Maybe this is a “slice of life” moment.

And that wasn’t the only line that got me: “It’s absurd to think that your life wont have a meaning unless you leave some work behind.” As true as this is, I still cant get over the fact that I feel there has to be something I must do to justify my existence. Maybe this blog is it. Maybe giving someone some entertainment for a few minutes is what I’m here to do… Either that or I’m just going through that emo phase. Go figure.

ANYWHO, did anyone notice that cherry blossom screensaver that was running on Ayu’s laptop? THAT IS FREAKING AWESOME. You’d totally get a prize if you could make that for me. If you didn’t notice, it’s like that one screensaver where it’s a buncha windows flying at you, but this time instead of windows, they’re sakura petals. Win.

And speaking of Ayu, (Read More »»»)

214. Honey and Clover II Chapter 9- A 300 Yen Flower

Pretty expensive for just a flower, huh?

Some of you may know that I have a soft spot for snowy scenes. My favorite shot of the episode was where Kaoru is sitting outside with the snow falling around him. A long while back when sledding was still fun, after an exhausting morning of sledding, I’d get out and just lay there on my sled with snow still falling from the sky. It’s very peaceful. I wish I could also be poetic and say it was beautiful but I was only looking at trees and telephone wires. But it was peaceful.

Then some of you may know my soft spot for scenes with tall buildings… OK no. But there’s something about snowy scenes with city buildings in the background. Something beautiful. Where I live is a crowded place, but not a city where there are tall buildings every 5 feet. Then why does looking at this scene just make me feel so nostalgic? It hasn’t been the first time either because I was also left breathless during the end of Cowboy Bebop’s Session XX. For an animator/laborer, it probably wouldn’t take a lot of work, I would think. Juxtapose a building here or there and then add snow fall. Yet it’s just so beautiful.

But it didn’t stop there either because in the later scenes near the 3/4 mark with Shuu, Yamada, and Takemoto, there was a very pretty red/blue/violet sky with buildings in the background. I had to rewatch that scene twice becuase I caught myself missing some lines from just staring at the background. Which brings me actually talking about this episode…

If it wasn’t for the fact that everyone in my house was already asleep, I would’ve yelled “Hagu-CHIIIIIIN!” when I saw her in the hospital.

Now I had the video file on my hard drive for a bit less than a day before I finally watched it. If I knew what was lying in that file, I would’ve been all over it the moment it finished. You knew something was gonna happen, something tragic, but it can wait, right? No. No, it cant. If you’ve been following the series and haven’t watched it, go now.

When TJ-Han saw this episode a few days ago, he mentioned that the beginning of the episode made it seem like she was trying to commit suicide -it’s true, it does-, and I became worried. A few scenes later, I let out a sigh of relief when I learned she hadn’t… but it was a quick sigh, though, becuase the fact that she’s still actualy majorly injured finally sunk in. Will she be able to paint again? What is Morita’s role? Will she die? Will Takemoto suddenly become Jesus Christ and save her?

Everyone has all heard Honey and Clover described as a slice-of-life show at least once -well, if you’re reading this, you probably have-. What does that mean, really? We all know our lives wont be like the anime. It’s not happening. We’re not going to all go to an art-college and some of us wont even fall in love. But this episode did show a side of humanity that’s not really hiding from us. If there was one word for it, I’d use it, but no, I’m going to try to describe it.

This episode didn’t really focus on any of our main characters, but rather two men who are still important in their own right. They wont be able to support four or five episodes about them, but given this one episode, they fit into the flow just fine. Who am I talking about, but Tatsuo, the Morita family friend and Kaoru the older Morita brother. It’s no secret that those two guys are alike. Both share the idea… rather… hope that there is something on this earth that only they could do. Something to make themselves unique. The concept that everyone is different is a bit flawed, I like to think. Yes, physically, they may not be anyone built the same way, but I just feel that there are people who, if combined together, would end up as if nothing happened to them at all. (Read More »»»)

174. Honey and Clover II Chapter 6- Where’s My Hagu? Who’s This, This, Woman?!

First off, sorry animeblogger.net for making it seem like I’m post whoring. Hopefully the RSS problem has been solved. Now. Seriously. Who is this woman? I did not sign up for that. I want more of this. At first glance, it was near impossible to distinguish who it was…. ok, not really, but come on. It was quite a shock to the system, let me tell ya. I mean WHOO WEEE. Hopefully they’ll never pull that again. Give me a moment to catch my breath, please.

Ok. ok. I’m done. As promised in the preview of the last episode, there was more Morita action. You know the phrase “Like father, like son“? Yeah? Perfect example right here. Shinobu and his father just give off this silly-carefree-yet-serious persona. Plus, they look pretty similar too. I’m not going to deny, I wouldn’t mind having my father adopting a similar style. He just reeks of cool.

The other male of the love trio we get to see a bit more of was Takemoto. I really think he’s finally starting to get a good grasp on his life and I’m proud of him. As he said, to build something large, you need a bigger base and I think that journey he took at the end of season one is that very base. And like his project, I believe his future once he chooses to do one thing, it’s filled with limitless possiblities.

Then of course, there’s Hagu… or should I call her Mrs Hagu. (Read More »»»)

Yes, yes, I know I’m very late on this -Episode 6 will come later this afternoon-. Let me explain, first. The reason it comes now is that I was too busy getting this. See how pretty it looks all nailed to my ceiling? It’s very pretty and very hard to find. I had to look through rack after rack of posters until I hit the jackpot. I almost cried while I was there. They also told me they used to have some of the dvd 1 Japan promos, but that’s ok, I have a mini one -also up on my ceiling-.

Now, here’s where I make the transition. Watch this: So that poster cost $26, but it was totally worth it. I would spend another 26 if there was another poster in a heartbeat. The entire year I’ve been saving little by little for Otakon so I could get Honey and Clover stuff. Though sad I ended up with just one item, it was money well spent. And it seems I was not the only person saving money. In this episode, we have Morita, a guy who’s raking in the dough like it’s all chump change… but he’s not spending it. As we witness the meeting between him and Kaoru, they’re scheming something. (Read More »»»)
